  • Military-grade jacketing for demanding environments
  • Flexible shielding mesh provides excellent EMI protection
  • Zipper closure system allows for toolless installation

Zipper-Mesh™ (PFR) cable shielding is a convenient and efficient method of providing EMI protection to harnesses and wire bundles. It is a highly-flexible shield constructed of 4-ply knitted wire mesh utilizing an internal shield overlap, an integral grounding strap, and a heavy-duty zipper closure. The zipper closure mechanism allows a toolless installation and easy re-entry for cable repair or modification.

The mesh jacket is protected with an outer jacket of flexible, flame-retardant PFR-18 polyurethane film. PFR-18 jacketing offers exceptional ruggedness, resistance to abrasion and most fluids, while exhibiting high flexibility in virtually any demanding environment. The military-grade material is an excellent choice for many nuclear, aerospace and military applications where PVC materials are not permitted.

There are two options for shielding mesh: SHX-4 (SnCuFe) and SHX-4 (S/S). SHX-4 (SnCUFe) consists of tin-plated, copper-clad steel wire, while SHX-4 (S/S) consists of 304 stainless-steel wire. Both are extremely flexible and durable and have excellent EMI shielding performance from 500 KHz through 1 GHz.

The operational temperature range of Zipper-Mesh™ (PFR) is -67°F to 225°F (-55°C to 107°C).

Q:  What lengths of Zipper-Mesh are available?

A:  Our zipper closed sleeves can be ordered in lengths as short as a few inches to lengths of 100 feet or more.  When quoting or ordering, make sure to clearly state the length of each sleeve in inches, which is typically referenced at the end of the part number (-X120.0 for example).

Q:  How does the knitted wire mesh compare to metal braided sleeving?

A:  Both are excellent shielding options utilizing conductive metal wires.  However, the knitted wire mesh can be formed into large and custom sizes & shapes that are not possible with standard metal braid.  Additionally, the physical structure of the mesh tends to keep its orientation better under flexing conditions where a braid may open up around bends.  Read our comparison article for more: Mesh vs. Braid

Q:  Can I solder to the mesh to add a ground or attachment point?

A:  Yes.  There are several ways to attach grounding leads, including soldering.  Other good options for grounding include crimping or requesting pre-installed ground extensions.  Reference our Shielding Termination Guide or contact a design engineer for more information.

Q:  What diameter of jacketing do I need?  Is it recommended to oversize?

A:  We will often suggest oversizing the sleeve diameter by 1/8” to allow for ease of installation.  If the application requires significant bending or flexing we will suggest even more extra room.  For assistance with sizing you can also contact one of our design engineers.

Q:  Can I cut the Jacketing?

A:  Yes*.  *Although you can cut the jacketing, we recommend ordering zipper-closed jackets to the exact length required.  If you need to trim down your jacketing, make sure you do it from the end opposite the zipper pin/box end and reinstall top zipper stops at the point where you trimmed the jacketing.  For more details
on cutting or size recommendations please contact one of our design engineers.

Q:  Will the zipper keep out water and is it water-tight?

A:  No.  Our standard zippers do a great job at keeping big debris and dirt out of the jacketing but are not water tight.  Our molded tooth zippers are rated at IP4X, which means they will keep out most dirt and dust but water splashing can enter the jacket.  If you need more protection, you may consider a track closure or adhesive closure option.
